Winter in Bogota

A Smorgasbord of Winter Fun in Bogota, Colombia

Like everywhere else, when the first snow comes, Bogota gears up for its winter smorgasbord.  In Bogota, the Andean peaks are capped with snow but in the big city, the weather is temperate.  If you want to escape the cold, Bogota is ready to welcome you with its stock of winter adventures tailor-made for different tastes.  In brief, there is always something for every one of all ages.

 Winter Hikes

Bogota Colombia is a very interesting city and tourists are always bowled over the beauty and culture of Bogota.  Tourists love the mountain views and the Old World civility which makes Bogota a different experience.  During winter, the fun continues although the place is not teeming with tourists, which is usual during summer.  If you want a spectacular holiday without the hordes of tourists, take a winter break in Bogota and join a mountain trek.

The months of December, January and February are the best times to take winter hikes in Bogota.  The weather is cooler and nights are cold.  Hiking the stretch towards the Andean peaks during this time is most sensible and the nights are lovelier.  You might miss the noise and the hurry of the city, but a break from the city to explore another side of Bogota gives you more reasons to love Bogota.

One favorite winter hike trail is the Paramo, which has distinct ecosystem.  There are valleys and plains, shrub lands, and forest patches along the way.  Hiking towards the Paramo, you will see the permanent snow line and the forest line.  The frailejon or espeletia or daisy-like flowers dot the landscape.  These flowers alone are worth a mountain winter hike.  To see the Paramo, rent a car so you can get out and enjoy the area - if you don't have the time for full-time Paramo hike.

Sign up for your winter hike and at the same time, look for holiday apartments online.  Holiday apartments are cooler alternatives to hotel living.  You have a choice of a fully-furnished one-bed apartment in the busy district or an apartment in the suburbs that have all the modern amenities, including broadband Internet.  What's more, these apartments are tastefully decorated and the rates are very reasonable.  On a winter holiday budget of $200 dollars a day, you still have extra for a great winter holiday in Bogota.

 Museums, Markets, and Bohemian Art

No tourist should miss the Gold Museum.  If you haven't seen much gold or interesting gold art work, you can have a fill of gold sighting here.  For the record there are thousands of gold items in the Gold Museum.  While at the museum, you also learn the methods and the regional styles of crafting gold.  It would take you hours gawking at all the beautifully crafted gold pieces.

Bogota has other interesting corners - wander around Usaquen to see the Colonial buildings, the colorful markets with villagers in their traditional costume, museums, restaurants and bohemian art.  If this is your first time in Bogota, don't miss these places.
