Bagging a Job in Bogotá

If there is one city in Latin America that is underestimated, undervalued and even unattractive to foreigners looking for work, then it must be Bogotá. Well, that's where people are misled by popular media reports painting the city in less than glowing terms.

In reality, Bogotá is one of the most influential, powerful and flourishing financial centers of Latin America that has survived the effects of the global recession in more ways than one.  In the year 2007, for example, when many countries were beginning to feel the effects of the recession, its commercial Gross Domestic Product grew by over 10 percent. 

This should not come as a surprise considering that the national and local governments have been and are aggressively pursuing development programs and projects in Bogotá and its surrounding areas.  Efforts have been focused on the significant improvement of the physical infrastructure as well as on peace and order, two prerequisites for progress in any city.  Plus, there is also the strategic geographical location of the city that makes it very accessible to its neighboring cities and towns as well as countries. 

With many things working in its favor, Bogotá has plenty of jobs to offer foreigners and local residents alike.  Of course, it will be to your advantage when your working papers are in order since illegal workers in the city are frowned upon especially when one is a foreigner.  Then again, this is true in other cities of the world, thus, it is not uncommon as you may think.

Other industries with favorable job prospects are the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, textile, metalworking and publishing industries.  And of course, look into a career within the tourism industry of Bogotá as it is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country, thanks to the aggressive marketing efforts, the vastly improved physical infrastructure and the impressive peace and order situation.

Bogotá deserves its ranking as a beta level city.  With its excellent environment and economy, job seekers will definitely bag a job in one of Latin America's most progressive capital cities.
